What is Breech
A breech presentation is when a fetus’s buttocks or feet are positioned closest to the cervix -intending to come out first during birth. This occurs in 3–4% of full-term pregnancies. With prenatal care midwives palpate fetal positioning. After to verify breech presentation by ultrasound.
Some factors can increase the likelihood of a breech presentation including: premature birth, fetal abnormalities, uterine malformations or fibroids, placenta previa, poly-hydramnios, umbilical cord issues, and multiple gestations. Having a breech presentation are more common in twin gestations. At the time of delivery approximately 30% of all twins are in a vertex/breech presentation and 10% are vertex/transverse.
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” -Psalm 139: 13

Methods to Turn Breech Baby
Most babies that are breech near the end of pregnancy will turn themselves by 36 to 37 weeks. The following methods are for those 3-4% of babies that remain breech and do not turn head-down on their own. Traditional ideas are researched and evidence based.
Positional methods can encourage baby to turn from breech to vertex. There are a few moves you can do that use gravity; forward inversions, breech tilt -ironing board technique, and using an inversion table. Some lighter measures would be -music, massage, swimming, crawling and pelvic rocks..
Practice forward inversions -using gravity to help baby by allowing space away from mothers spine and pelvic inlet. Higher success rate with normal amniotic fluid levels will allow for increased mobility. Decreased movement if baby has already descended into the pelvis and is snuggly engaged.

ECV to Turn Breech
Next, external cephalic version (ECV) is a hands on procedure that encourages breech baby to turn. Few providers out of hospital may attempt rotation with success. If baby remains in breech position they are offered a vaginal birth, or referred out for cesarean.
The success rate of ECV at 37 weeks gestation or beyond between 50-72.3%. With procedure length under a minute, or can take up to 16 minutes. In hospital ECV is offered, most babies who remain breech after attempt at turning them will be delivered by cesarean.
Online research has ECV as generally safe. In rare cases, it can cause change in baby’s heart rate, disruption to placenta, and preterm labor.
Research link on ECV Safety: According to WebMD-usually safe, has risks in rare cases. Research Link ECV Cost: According to MDsave, cost of an ECV in Texas can range from $3,749 to $5,497. One study found that attempting an ECV is cost-effective when the chance of success is more than 32%. A successful ECV can help families avoid a cesarean.
